Foundation Svébyt (for proper registration in the Foundation Register see http://wwwinfo.mfcr.cz/ares/ares_fr.html.cz ) was founded in 1993 and in the same year received as a gift the Castle Brtnice, i.e. building no. 1 including the plots no. 243/1, 246, 247 and 510 (built-up) in the cadastral area Brtnice u Jihlavy, as is written in the Real-estate Cadastre (see http://nahlizenidokn.cuzk.cz/  ).

The above mentioned legal status was questioned during the nineties by the municipality of Brtnice which tried to prevent the owner from asserting his rights and responsibilities and also tried to change the legal status. However it is in everyone‘s interest to save the historical building and castle grounds from complete devastation. The castle should be a properly renovated and preserved centre of cultural and other diverse activities not only for the local population but for everyone that lives close and far. This is exactly the aim of the Foundation which will take appropriate steps as soon as legal and other obstructions on the part of the municipal authorities of Brtnice are removed.

After several frustrating years in 2004 the foundation authorities were reconstructed and the necessary deposit was made at the Foundation Registry in 2005. The new board installed its chairman at the castle. In June 2005 it took over the stewardship of the castle, together with the Society of J. Hoffman prepared an international festival “Brtnice Anvil 2005”. On 6.8.2005 the Foundation helped prepare a Miss SUMMER 2005 competition. Many other activities are being prepared in the castle grounds and elsewhere either in co-operation with others or alone. The Foundation hopes to finance the renovation with the help of EU funds, commercial subjects and possibly even organise a public collection.

The legal disputes concerning the ownership of the castle have been resolved followingly. All legal disputes obstructing owner’s rights during the nineties have been stopped. In 2003 the Office of Government Representation in Property Affairs brought a case to decide ownership against six subjects including the municipality of Brtnice and the Foundation. On 29.7.2005 a court of first instance confirmed the Foundation as a rightful owner.
